She graduated in literary studies and sociology from the University in Zagreb. She is the author of several books of reportage, including How We Survived Communism and EvenLaughed (1991), Balkan Express (1992), Café Europa (1996), and A Guided Tour Through the Museum of Communism (2011), and the novels Hologrami straha (Holograms of fear, 1987), Mramorna koža (Marbleskin, 1989), Božanska glad (Divine hunger, 1997), Kao da me nema (As if I were not, 1999). She has contributed to The Nation, Guardian, La Stampa, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and Politiken. She writes in Croatian and in English, and her books have been translated into more than 15 languages.
