Sensorial Practices and Experiences in Europe (1300\u20131800)&#8221; (Bratislava, 21-23 September 2026)"},"content":{"rendered":"<section class=\"txtblock wow fadeIn\" data-wow-delay=\"0.2s\">\r\n    <div class=\"container\">\r\n        <div class=\"row\">\r\n            <div class=\"col-xl-8 offset-xl-2 col-lg-10 offset-lg-1\">\r\n        <h1 class=\"wow fadeInUp\" data-wow-delay=\"0.2s\">Art and Heritage in Central Europe<\/h1>            <div class=\"txt wow fadeInUp\" data-wow-delay=\"0.3s\"><p data-start=\"87\" data-end=\"485\">This conference, organised by COST Action 24164: Sensing Europe\u2019s Court Spaces at the Crossroads of Past, Present and Future (SENSES) and Slovak University of Technology,\u00a0explores the central question: How do the senses\u2014understood as the full range of sensorial experiences\u2014constitute the sacred at court as an active and creative process?\u00a0Bringing together scholars from different disciplines, it examines how sacred space in early modern courts was produced, perceived, and transformed through inter-sensorial experience and performative practice.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"487\" data-end=\"1052\">Particular attention will be given to the ways ritual sought to overwhelm the senses, and how visual, auditory, olfactory, tactile, and spatial dimensions interacted to create powerful sacred atmospheres. The conference also investigates how liturgical practices at court permeated and reshaped spaces beyond the strictly defined sacred area, generating \u201ctrans-religious\u201d environments. By considering the differing sensory experiences of various courtly audiences, participants will reflect on how the sacred was seen, heard, smelled, and embodied in distinct ways.<\/p>\n<p>A concluding round table will address the methodological and epistemological challenges of studying sensory experience and sacred space within an interdisciplinary framework.<\/p>\n<p>Date: 21-23 September 2026<\/p>\n<p>Location: Slovak University of Technology (STU), Bratislava<\/p>\n<p>Organizers: Andrea Vargov\u00e1 (STU), Monika Rycht\u00e1rikov\u00e1 (KU Leuven\/STU), Magdal\u00e9na Kvasnicov\u00e1 (STU), Vojtech Chmel\u00edk (STU)<\/p>\n<p>Focusing on courtly contexts 1300\u20131800, the conference intends to explore the inter-sensorial performances and experiences within religious spaces of European court residences. It is explicitly conceived as forward-looking, aiming to open future avenues of research and foster shared methodological standards across disciplines. The organisers particularly encourage participation from art and architecture historians, scholars in cognitive sciences and historical cognition studies, olfactory heritage studies, digital humanities researchers, heritage specialists and curators, as well as digital designers and simulation experts.
