Exhibition “Kinetic Visions. Nicolas Schöffer and Victor Vasarely in Dialogue” at the Hungarian National Gallery in Budapest

Art and Heritage in Central Europe

This chamber exhibition brings the parallel oeuvres of Nicolas Schöffer and Victor Vasarely into dialogue.

The oeuvre of these two artists, who had Hungarian roots but lived and worked in France, can be examined in terms of their shared aesthetic and theoretical aspirations: geometric abstraction, technological and visual innovation, and a commitment to the viewer’s active participation. While Schöffer, a pioneer of cybernetic art, worked with the dynamics of movement and light, Vasarely created new visual worlds by exploring optical illusion and perception.

Nicolas Schöffer (1912–1992) and Victor Vasarely (1906–1997) were defining figures of twentieth century avant-garde art who settled in France within a few years of each other. Through their commitment to geometric abstraction and technological and visual innovation, they both opened up new paths in modern art. Schöffer was a pioneer of cybernetic art, while Vasarely became known as a leading figure in the Op art movement. Although they worked in different media, both sought to ensure that their creations were not merely static images or sculptures, but prompted the viewer to actively participate in the experience. Their visionary approach and utopian ideas contributed to the progressive reimagination of the modern urban environment.

The exhibition accompanies the Vasarely 120 exhibition, which will be on display at the Museum of Fine Arts from May 15. It is a chamber exhibition available from March 19 to August 23, 2026 in the FOCUS room of the International Collection after 1800.

Curators of the exhibition: Mónika Zombori art historian and Vera Pócs art historian.
