Exhibition “The City on Three Hills. Medieval Olomouc from the archaeological perspective” in Olomouc
Art and Heritage in Central Europe
The material culture of medieval Olomouc from the 7th to the 15th century is the subject of an exhibition that takes place at the Archdiocesan Museum Olomouc from 7 May 2025. For the first time in history, visitors are able to see all the most important archaeological discoveries made in Olomouc from the 19th century to the present day exhibited together.
The exhibition reveals the origins and development of the settlement of Olomouc Hill in the Middle Ages. It explains the historical significance of the three local hills – Svatopetrský, Svatováclavský and Svatomichalský, where the seat of the Olomouc princes and two stone castles stood. It also deals with the beginnings of the Olomouc bishopric, defunct church buildings, etc.
In addition to the latest interpretations of the discoveries made by archaeological excavations, especially during the 20th and 21st centuries, visitors will be able to get an idea of the everyday life of the inhabitants of medieval Olomouc through a rich selection of exhibits from the fields of housing, dining, clothing, jewellery, weapons and equipment, currency, trade and games, as well as education and faith.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalogue by a collective of authors, which will summarise and put into a new context all the findings known so far, including those that have not yet been published in the literature.
The exhibition is available until 31 August 2025.
