A German writer and translator, author of novels, essays and radio scripts, and poet. Born in Schässburg (Rom. Sighişoara) in Transylvania, Romania. He started his career as a teacher, and later became the editor-in-chief of the magazine Neue Literatur. Since 1973 he has spent his time alternately in Stuttgart and Camaiore, Italy.
