“From Andrej Varchola to Andy Warhol and Back” Exhibition in Prešov

Art and Heritage in Central Europe

The Slovak National Museum – Museum of Ruthenian Culture in Prešov, in cooperation with the Andy Warhol Museum of Modern Art in Medzilaborce, has prepared a mixed media exhibition entitled “Od Andreja Varcholu po Andyho Warhola a späť” (From Andrej Varchola to Andy Warhol and Back).

The exhibition presents Warhol’s pre-pop art work in the context of culture, religion, and the influence of his mother on the perception of art and his work. It features drawings from the period before Warhol studied at college, rare documents, and photographs. Masterpieces of the king of pop art from the 1960s and 1970s, films, and other visual media, as well as Billy Naem’s photographs of the Factory are also presented. Paintings with sacral themes and portraits of dictators created by the artist in the last 10 years of his life are also on display.

This project, which is curated by Mgr. Martin Cubjak, director of MMUAW, and dr. Michal Bycko PhD., art manager and curator of the MMUAW in Medzilaborce, will also include film screenings, lectures, discussions, workshops, and guided tours for groups.

The exhibition will run until January 15, 2024.
