Worth a look
“Rembrandt – Hoogstraten. Colour and Illusion” Exhibition at the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna
Art and Heritage in Central Europe
For the first time, the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna presents an exhibition on the important Baroque painter Rembrandt. Never before has it been possible to admire such a wealth of international loans by the master in Austria.
The comprehensive show “”Rembrandt – Hoogstraten” will amaze you with impressive paintings and drawings. The abundance of masterpieces not only provides an insight into Dutch Baroque painting, but also illuminates Rembrandt and Hoogstraten’s shared fascination with illusionistic deception and virtual reality. Loans from renowned museums all over the world, including the National Gallery in London, the Rijksmuseum, the Louvre and the Metropolitan Museum, have made it possible to show these sensational works together for the first time.
The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue – a lavishly illustrated volume that explores Rembrandt’s work and artistic personality from the perspective of his exceptionally innovative pupil Samuel van Hoogstraten. Van Hoogstraten’s multi-faceted oeuvre clearly betrays the influence of his teacher Rembrandt, in turn Rembrandt was stimulated by the creative impulses he received from the younger colleague. The book highlights two essential aspects of the two artists’ oeuvres: colour and illusion.
The exhibition at the Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien is available from 8 October 2024 to 12 January 2025.
