“Young Poland: An Arts and Crafts Movement (1890 – 1918)” is the first major exhibition to explore the decorative arts and architecture of Young Poland (Młoda Polska), an extraordinary cultural movement that flourished in response to Poland’s invasion and occupation by foreign powers.

The exhibition begins with an introduction to Young Poland before focusing on its foremost figure, Stanisław Wyspiański. The next section charts the development of the Zakopane Style of architecture and interiors and the work of its founder, Stanisław Witkiewicz. The third section is devoted to another significant Zakopane-based Young Poland figure, Karol Kłosowski. Rarely-seen paintings and illustrations by playwright and poet Maria Pawlikowska-Jasnorzewska are revealed in section four. The final section showcases the work of the Kraków Workshops, a cooperative of artists and designers who combined Young Poland themes with a drive for original and independent art forms.Other artists featured in the exhibition include Józef Czajkowski, Wojciech Jastrzębowski, Józefa Kogut, Bonawentura Lenart, Jacek Malczewski, Jan Matejko, Józef Mehoffer and Henryk Uziembło.

Exhibition curated by Julia Griffin, Andrzej Szczerski and Roisin Inglesby, organised in partnership with the National Museum in Kraków and the Polish Cultural Institute, London. Co-financed by the Polish Minister of Culture, National Heritage and Sport within the framework of the Inspiring Culture Programme.
