“NMW Collects. Purchases from 2017–2022” Exhibition at the National Museum in Warsaw

Art and Heritage in Central Europe

The National Museum in Warsaw is constantly completing and expanding its collection. From 2017 to 2022, the NMW acquired some works by Marc Chagall, Francisco Goya, Mela Muter, Wojciech Weiss and Stanisław Wyspiański. Moreover, it bought works by some of Poland’s most prominent contemporary artists who explore various fields of art: Zuzanna Janin, Grzegorz Kowalski, Zofia Kulik, Teresa Murak and Aleksandra Waliszewska.

Recent acquisitions include objects as diverse as a unique photograph by Nadar, intriguing French miniatures, a complete dessert service of Meissen china from the mid-eighteenth century, along with examples of twentieth-century Polish applied art, such as furniture designed by Edward Trojanowski and Edmund Homa or porcelain from Chodzież and Ćmielów manufactures. Visitors will also find artefacts from China and Japan on display, as well as purchases made to complement the Poster Museum’s collection, such as a poster designed by Tadeusz Gronowski.

The exhibition will feature a diverse selection (over 120 works) of the NMW’s purchases from the past six years, including all of Chagall’s works bought by the Museum. It will offer the public an insight into the fascinating process of expanding the museum’s collection.

Curator: Piotr P. Czyż, PhD. The exhibition is open from 11th of May to 27th of August 2023.
