“Sibylle Bergemann. Photographs” Exhibition at the National Museum in Gdańsk

Art and Heritage in Central Europe

The “Sibylle Bergemann. Photographs” exhibition reviews the work of one of the most interesting German photographers of the last few decades. Her rich oeuvre has already found its place in the leading collections of modern art in Germany and worldwide. So far, however, it has not been widely presented in Poland. The National Museum in Gdańsk, as the first in our country, will present this outstanding artist to the public with a monographic approach.

Bergemann has expressed herself in many fields of photography: fashion, portraits, reportage, photo essays and urban and rural landscapes. Her diverse and timeless works are a testament to exceptional image sensitivity, commitment and empathy. A significant group of works is related to the time of transformation in East Germany, the search for traces left by places once teeming with life. The ability to notice the diversity and specificity of cities is visible in scenes from urban life in such metropolises as New York, Paris, Tokyo or Sao Paulo. In Africa and the Middle East, on the other hand, the artist photographed everyday life flowing between traditional culture and the beginning of globalisation without resorting to stereotypes.

Exhibition prepared in collaboration with ifa (Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen Abteilung Kunst) and the Goethe-Institut is available at the National Museum in Gdańsk – Green Gate (Zielona Brama), Długi Targ 24 from 3 February to 3 May 2023.
