Worth a look
“Károly Divald and his sons. From Prešov to Budapest” Exhibition at the Slovak National Gallery in Bratislava
Art and Heritage in Central Europe
The Prešov photographer Károly Divald is a leading figure in the history of 19th-century photography in the territory of the former Upper Hungary (today’s Slovakia). Originally trained as a pharmacist, he began his career as a portrait photographer during the 1860s in Bardejovské Kúpele and Prešov. From the beginning of the 1870s, he became one of the first and most prolific photographers of the Tatra Mountains (Central Carpathians), and later, in cooperation with the newly founded Hungarian Carpathian Association, also of the Eastern Carpathians and Pieniny Mountains.
The monographic exhibition of Károly Divald represents the first comprehensive art-historical treatment of his life and his photographic production in our environment, and at the same time makes a significant contribution to an overview of the history of photography in Slovakia in the 19th century.
The exhibition at SNG in Bratislava is available from 28 June 2024 to 6 October 2024. The exhibition and exhibition catalogue were realised in cooperation with the Regional Museum in Prešov.
